DROW LANGUAGE 5E

The divide that happened in ancient times among the elves gave rise to three sub-races namely,  high elves, wood elves, and dark elves, who are now commonly called drow. Drows are humanoids creatures with many features. The drow is often classified into two types like Common/deep/low drow and high drow.

The Drow language is the language most common to the Drow. The Drow also called Dark Elves live in the Underdark; the subterranean realm beneath Faerun of the Forgotten realms of the Dungeons and Dragons game. They also live in several other Dungeons and Dragons settings.

The Drow are descendants of Elves who were cast out because they worshipped the evil spider goddess Lolth. Lolth has been given several names such as Mother of Lust, Queen of the Demonweb, Dark Mother, Spider Bitch, etc. There are actually two Drow languages namely; Common or Low or Deep Drow and High Drow

Common/Deep/Low Drow

This Common Drow language is an ancient analytical language that has existed for a very long time on the internet. The source is unknown. However, it is a language with a simple grammatical structure not very different from the English language. Any closer look at the grammar of Common Drow will reveal that the language is actually related to English.

The grammatical categories are exactly the same and are expressed in ways precisely parallel to the corresponding English. This Common draw was designed to be used by non-natives who have an interest in Drows and who enjoy playing them. Common Drow was read right to left in single-word columns with little punctuation.

High Drow

The High Drow language is designed by Jashan A’al. High Drow is a richly inflected language, and to be considered the true language. It is a more complex language as compared to the Common Drow, hence the name. The language uses the same vocabulary as the Common Drow but has a much more elaborate grammar. The high drow is greatly used by Nobles and Priestesses. This mainly is to enshroud their proceedings in secrecy and keep the meaning from lower-born drows, slaves, and non-native speakers. The High Drow language has 24 consonant phonemes in total.

Both Drow languages are fan creations and thus non-canon, though a part of the vocabulary has a canon source.

Drow Sign Language

Drow Sign language is a code used by Drows to communicate in the Underdark. This is mostly used when silence is of utmost necessity and communication expedient. It has no alphabet, hence no written form. Often times humans confuse this sign language as though it is a spell conjuration. This language is very crucial to the Drows especially during wars, gatherings, and in the carrying of their various evil plots.
